Riyan Parag Credits Virat Kohli as Inspiration: "The King Who Gave Me My India Cap"
Young Indian all-rounder Riyan Parag has expressed his profound admiration for Virat Kohli, citing him as his primary cricketing inspiration. The 23-year-old fondly referred to Kohli as “The king who gave me my India cap” during a recent Q&A session on Instagram, responding to a question about his biggest career influence.
Parag achieved a significant milestone in August 2024, becoming the first male cricketer from Assam to represent India in ODIs. He received his debut cap from Kohli himself before the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo. This moment, according to Parag, held immense symbolic value, representing his aspirations as a cricketer.
During the cap presentation, the BCCI shared a video in which Kohli conveyed an empowering message to Parag. Kohli stated, “Riyan, firstly congratulations for getting to play your first game for India...people who are responsible for you guys getting selected were watching you and they’ve seen something special in you…they see something special in you.”
Kohli further encouraged Parag, emphasizing his potential to be a match-winner for India. "You have that ability to be a match-winner for India. I know you have that belief, I’ve known you for a while now and we all have that belief in you. No better time to step in today, 0-1 down, to start off your international career...Cap 256, Riyan Parag."
Although Parag's ODI debut resulted in a modest score of 15 runs, his overall trajectory has been promising. In nine T20Is, he has accumulated 106 runs with a strike rate of 151.4, providing glimpses of the aggressive style that distinguished him in the IPL.
As Parag develops on the international stage, his respect for Kohli remains evident – a tribute to the individual who welcomed him into the Indian team and made a lasting impact on his career.
