Hollywood on Tuesday, bid goodbye to Oscar-winning actor, director, and activist, Robert Redford. According to a statement issued by his family, he passed away in his sleep at his Utah home. He was 89. A statement, shared by his longtime publicist Cindi Berger, read, “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."News of his death set off an outpouring of love and tributes from fans, friends and film industry greats including actress Meryl Streep to producer Ron Howard. Even US President Donald Trump joined in and honoured the screen legend for his contributions to cinema. Meryl Streep, who starred opposite Redford in the 1985 drama 'Out of Africa', paid touching tribute in a post that read, "One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend," as reported by AFP. Trump also shared a few brief words just before boarding Air Force One. He said, "Wow, that's a good way to go, I guess. But I'll tell you, Robert Redford was great. He had a series of years where there was nobody better.“
Trump went on to say, "There was a period of time when he was the hottest.
I thought he was great."Emmy-winner Coleman Domingo wrote in a tweet, "With love and admiration. Thank you Mr. Redford for your everlasting impact. Will be felt for generations. R.I.P."
Horror author Stephen King also tweeted, “Robert Redford has passed away. He was part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the 70s and 80s. Hard to believe he was 89.”
Director Ron Howard has called the late star a “tremendously influential cultural figure for the creative choices made as an actor/producer/director.”Actress Marlee Matlin, one of the stars of Oscar-winning film Coda, which first premiered at Sundance film festival, wrote, “Our film, Coda, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed.”
Rosie O’Donnell also shared her tribute on Instagram with a post that read, “Oh hubbell – we will never be the same – goodnight bob – what a legacy #sundancefilmfestival #redford."
