Sunita Ahuja calls herself Govinda’s lady luck: 'Jab humara engagement hua, tab Govinda superstar bana'
Earlier this week, Govinda and his wife Sunita Ahuja put an end to speculation about trouble in their marriage during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Sunita firmly dismissed all divorce rumours, saying people should not believe anything unless it comes directly from them. The couple, married since 1987, are proud parents to Tina and Yashvardhan. In a recent interview with Eat Travel Repeat, before she addressed the ongoing chatter, Sunita opened up about Govinda’s struggling years and how she turned out to be his “lady luck” and her mother-in-law’s best choice.

‘I took it as a challenge to impress him’

“Govinda used to stay at my sister’s house during his struggling days. He lived there for nearly three years while I was still in school. My brother-in-law once told me, ‘A boy is coming, you should try to impress him.’ I had heard that Govinda didn’t like girls much, so I accepted the challenge. I managed to impress him, and eventually, we got married. Today, I can proudly say I’m truly happy,” Sunita recalled.

‘I stood by him when he was becoming a hero’

Sunita admitted her father wasn’t happy with the marriage initially, and even after tying the knot, they didn’t reveal it right away. “Tabhi naya naya Govinda hero bana tha na.
People used to say his popularity would suffer if fans knew he was married, but I always felt that was nonsense. If someone is destined for success, they’ll get it. Luck and destiny always play their part.”

‘My mother-in-law chose well’

Talking about marriage myths, Sunita said, “These days, people say getting married before a film brings good luck. But I’ve never believed in such things. For me, when a woman enters a house, she brings the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Not every woman does—some can even ruin a man’s life. But my mother-in-law made the right choice. She believed I’d bring fortune to Govinda, and I think she was absolutely right. Govinda was in the final year of B.Com. Jab humara baat hua, engagement hua, tab Govinda superstar bana.”

‘I know him better than anyone else’

Reflecting on almost four decades of togetherness, Sunita added, “People call me his lady luck, but I keep telling Govinda that myself. He knows it but rarely acknowledges it aloud. After so many years, words are not needed between us. I can sense everything—when he’s hungry, when he wants a Coke, when he’s upset. Nobody can know him the way I do, because my love for him comes from within. No one can love Govinda the way I do.

‘I won his heart through food’

Sunita also revealed how she always made time to be by his side, even during his busiest shooting schedules. “I used to visit sets with lunch for him—even on outdoor shoots—because Govinda loves food. I learnt from my mother that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. He often had five shifts a day, so the only time I could see him was during lunch. I’d cook dal, bhindi, palak paneer, paya soup, chicken—he loved it all. I am a desi, he is a desi, and that’s what connected us.”
