Kajol's return to the silver screen in the horror-thriller 'Maa' has garnered a promising response at the Indian box office. Directed by Vishal Furia, the film experienced a significant surge on Saturday, propelling its total earnings to an estimated ₹10.30 crore within the first two days.
'Maa', which premiered on Friday, raked in ₹4.65 crore on its opening day, according to sacnilk.com. This figure exceeded initial trade predictions that estimated a range of ₹3.50 to ₹4.50 crore. The film's production house celebrated the opening day success on X, stating, "Fear Finds Faith – ₹4.93 Cr Day 1 NBOC India."
The film witnessed substantial growth on Saturday, accumulating an additional ₹5.65 crore, driven by increased attendance during evening and night screenings. Hindi occupancy rates averaged 26.38% throughout the day, peaking at approximately 38.45% during the night shows.
'Maa' features Kajol, Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, and Ronit Roy. The plot revolves around a mother who transforms into Goddess Kali to confront a dark curse fueled by fear, blood, and treachery.
Ahead of the film's release, Kajol conveyed her excitement about her first major theatrical release since Salaam Venky (2022). "I am very excited. My film is releasing in theatres after a long time, and I am extremely happy about it," she told ANI.
The actress further commented on her role, "Every actor has to reinvent himself or herself with time. I had never thought I would do a horror film, but here we are. I am extremely proud of this film. The script is quite good. I am a big mythological buff. I love our Indian mythology. We have so many stories. So, I think it was one of my favourite stories."
Kajol concluded with her signature wit, "I am very grateful that I have done this film. I think we have made a very good film. Now the audience will tell... But, Maa ki kasam, humne achhi film banai hai," she laughed.
Despite a limited release across 1,500 screens in India and competition from Sitaare Zameen Par, Kannappa, and F1: The Movie, 'Maa' has maintained its position and is on track for a strong opening weekend. However, Kajol's horror film is trailing behind F1, which garnered an estimated ₹15 crore in its initial two days. Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has already exceeded ₹100 crore at the box office.
