Marshals attempted to push Sainz's car, and the driver initially tried to rejoin the race from the pit lane. However, disaster struck when the rear brakes ignited, forcing Sainz to retire from the race as the car was beyond immediate repair. The race was subsequently shortened to 70 laps.

The challenging race conditions further added to the drama, with air temperatures soaring to 32 degrees Celsius and track temperatures reaching a scorching 54 degrees. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin quipped about the extreme heat in the cockpit while waiting for the restart, highlighting the intense conditions faced by the drivers.

Despite the chaos, Lando Norris emerged victorious at the Austrian Grand Prix, successfully fending off his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The early stages of the race saw a fierce battle between the two McLaren drivers, with Piastri briefly taking the lead before Norris reclaimed it.

Piastri lost ground during pit stops and was forced off the track by Alpine's Franco Colapinto while navigating traffic. Although he managed to close the gap to Norris, he couldn't execute a successful overtake. Norris later described the race as a "beautiful one-two" finish for McLaren.

The championship standings witnessed a significant shift after Max Verstappen's race ended prematurely due to a collision with Kimi Antonelli on the first lap. Piastri now leads Norris by 15 points, while Verstappen trails in third place, 61 points behind Piastri.

Ferrari secured the next two positions, with Charles Leclerc claiming third place, marking his third podium finish in the last four races. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, finished fourth. George Russell of Mercedes, following his Canadian Grand Prix victory, finished fifth. Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls achieved his season-best result in sixth place. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin managed to hold off Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber for seventh place. Nico Hulkenberg in the second Sauber finished ninth, and Haas driver Esteban Ocon completed the points-scoring positions in tenth.
