Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI's deviation from its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, has announced that his AI startup, xAI, will be open-sourcing its Grok chatbot this week. Musk has long advocated for the democratization of artificial intelligence (AI), making it accessible to all.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a software, such as a chatbot, entails making the software projects redistributable with full access to the source code for everyone. A key advantage of open-source software is the flexibility it offers to enterprises, enabling them to explore multiple solutions to a problem instead of relying solely on an internal team.
In response to a user's suggestion that OpenAI should follow suit and open-source its models, Musk didn't hold back, stating, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk initially expressed his support for open-source AI during a podcast appearance last November. He told Lex Fridman, “I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing.”
These comments followed the release of Grok by xAI, an AI company founded by Musk. The chatbot was reportedly developed in just four months. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to the launch with a post highlighting the ease of building similar models using GPT Builder, stating "GPTs can save a lot of effort."
Musk retorted with a less-than-impressed response, saying, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine.”
