India's recent Test defeat at Headingley has sparked debate, but coach Gautam Gambhir is standing by his team, particularly the lower order, despite their batting collapses. The match, part of the India tour of England, 2025, saw England chase down a target of 371 with relative ease, leaving India with their seventh loss in the last nine Tests.
India amassed 835 runs, featuring five centurions including Rishabh Pant with a century in both innings. However, two significant batting collapses proved costly.
These collapses undermined India's chances after winning the toss and posting a substantial first-innings total.
Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century, mentioned the team aimed for a target around 435. Gambhir, however, believed a first-innings score of 570 or 580 could have sealed India's dominance.
Despite the lower order's struggles, Gambhir defended their application. Shardul Thakur, selected for his all-round abilities, fell to expansive shots in both innings, while Prasidh Krishna was dismissed attempting a slog sweep.
Gambhir stated, "Even proper batters fail. Hopefully, they'll learn, and hopefully, we'll get better performances from our tail. And that is not the only reason we lost the Test match."
Another critical factor was India's poor catching performance. They dropped seven catches, including a costly one by Yashasvi Jaiswal that allowed Ben Duckett to score a match-defining 149. Gill acknowledged the need for improvement in this area.
While acknowledging the team's youth, Gambhir dismissed it as an excuse for the defeat. "Every defeat is bad. It's not about a young team or an experienced team. It's an Indian team... A young team is not an excuse... We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win the test match and win the series."
Gambhir also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would only play two more Test matches, according to a pre-series workload management plan. The specific matches are yet to be decided. Despite this, Gambhir expressed confidence in the remaining bowlers. He believes in their ability to compete and deliver victories for India.
