Iyer's Test Debut on Hold, Claims Cricket Analyst
Despite impressive performances across all formats, Shreyas Iyer may have to wait longer for his Test debut, according to former Indian opener Aakash Chopra. The 30-year-old's recent form has sparked debate about his inclusion in the Test squad, but Chopra believes several other players are ahead in the pecking order.
Shreyas Iyer's wait for a Test call-up may be longer than expected.
Iyer was a standout performer in India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory and enjoyed a successful IPL and domestic red-ball season. However, Chopra suggests that opportunities in Test cricket require patience.
"Shreyas Iyer won’t get a chance now. Many others haven’t gotten a chance either," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel. He highlighted players like Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel, who are also waiting for their opportunities. "If he cannot even get among those who are in the waiting line, then how can he be considered for selection?" he questioned.
Iyer's recent statistics are indeed impressive. He amassed 480 runs in seven innings in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, boasting an average of 68.57 and a strike rate exceeding 90. His IPL performance was equally remarkable, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and leading Punjab Kings to their first final in nine years.
Chopra acknowledged Iyer's achievements but reiterated the need for patience. "I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final, did well in white-ball cricket — but his time will come in Tests. He will have to wait just a little bit."
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan, another strong contender, continues to make a case for his inclusion. Following three half-centuries and a score of 150 in six Tests, he scored 92 for India A against England Lions and followed it up with a century in the intra-squad match ahead of the England series.
